Doctor Negrin University Hospital

The Doctor Negrin University Hospital of Gran Canaria (Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín) Is located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the Canary Islands, Spain. The center was opened in June 1999 in response to the demand from various public and private institutions and from citizens themselves. The hospital has a staff of 2000 workers, 704 beds for hospitalization, 43 day beds, and a surgical area of 24 installed operation rooms. It has the latest technical diagnostic and treatment equipment including, among others, magnetic resonance and linear accelerators. It is a regional reference center for radio-therapeutic oncology.

Brachytherapy expertise

A dedicated brachy team consisting of 4 radiation oncologists and 3 physicists treat around 200 patients with brachytherapy a year. The staff has a significant clinical practice in a broad range of body sites and techniques, for example in breast, lung, cervix, endometrium and prostate cancer. The hospital is fully equipped with the latest solutions for HDR image-guided brachytherapy and using all imaging modalities including CT and MRI.

Educational activities

As part of the BrachyAcademy, the Doctor Negrin University Hospital is a designated Educational Center for HDR brachytherapy for breast, lung, cervix, endometrium and prostate. Training visits to the hospital are organized for clinicians, physicists and nurses from all over the world, to enable them to observe clinical workflows and daily practices at first hand. As the dedicated and experienced brachytherapy staff is fluent in both English and Spanish, this center is also very attractive for Spanish speaking visitors.
