Tata Memorial Center

The Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, India is recognized as one of the leading cancer centers in the world. Every year the hospital performs 6300 major operations and treats 6000 patients with radiotherapy and chemotherapy in multidisciplinary programs. Evidence-based Medicine is the keystone of the Tata Memorial Centre’s endeavors, and its total cancer care program combines strategies for early diagnosis, treatment management, rehabilitation, pain relief and terminal care.

Brachy expertise

Brachytherapy at the Tata Memorial Hospital dates back to 1941 with the introduction of ‘Radon Seeds’. Manual and remote afterloading were introduced in the 1980’s and further advancements were made with the acquisition of the HDR microSelectron unit in 1994. The highly refined techniques used today make the Tata Memorial Centre one of the leading training centers for brachytherapy in the region.

Educational activities

As part of its training program, the Tata Memorial Centre conducted a two-day educational workshop ‘Transition from 2D to 3D Brachytherapy in Gynaecology’ in January 2013. The workshop focused on the clinical and practical implementation of the transition, explaining 3D imaging and addressing tumor and target visualization. Particular attention was paid to solutions with access to MRI, CT Scan and ultrasound for brachytherapy applications, and participants were given hands-on exercises in contouring, using various imaging methods.
