Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology (MSCNRIO) Gliwice Branch is one of the largest hospitals in Poland, with an in-patient capacity of 500 beds. Located in Gliwice, Silesia, it is a tertiary referral hospital and Polish national research institute with the adoption of highly advanced technology, MSCNRIO Gliwice has seen uninterrupted growth in the areas of research, medical studies and personnel development.
Brachy expertise
Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology Gliwice Branch introduced brachytherapy in ca. 1965 and HDR brachytherapy in 1983.
Radiation oncologists and physicists from the MSCNRIO Gliwice hospital attended workshops on breast, prostate, head and neck cancers (faculty member) in National Institute of Oncology in Budapest, Policlinico Gemelli in Rome, Greater Poland Cancer Center in Poznań plus onsite. The hospital was quick to adopt this technology and has been offering surface and gynecology HDR from 1983 and interstitial from 1998 to its patients since first using 2D planning, later on CT-based planning and introducing MRI-based planning in 2012.
MSCNRIO Gliwice hospital has an extensive brachytherapy service with a special focus on prostate, skin and gynae cancers.
The center has impressive brachytherapy facilities and a dedicated brachy team of 6 radiation oncologists and 3 physicists. Around 800–1000 patients receive brachytherapy treatment a year. The center is equipped for HDR image-based treatment, and is recognized as an expert center in the region.
Educational activities
From 2020, MSCNRIO Gliwice hospital is a designated global Training Center for prostate, skin, gynecology, and breast brachytherapy techniques, with a special focus on prostate and skin malignancies.
Training visits to the hospital are organized for people wishing to learn more about surface and interstitial brachytherapy, where they can observe clinical workflows and daily practices at first hand.
The hospital can host 1 to 60 days in-house training on aspects of as above.
Through extensive discussions and hands-on exercises, participants gained comprehensive practical insight into the clinical workflow of 3D image-guided adaptive brachytherapy for prostate, skin, gynecology, and breast tumours.
